CHRYSALIX

We answered the call from Wandsworth Council for creatives to take part in their summer programming in Nine Elms; called ‘Movement & Metamorphosis’. Winning the commission through a new community voting selection process, we were 1 of 5 creative individuals/ teams to be granted funding for our project. We designed a biophilic sculpture made out of willow interwoven with planting, which would allow the sculpture to metamorphose from a raw willow structure into a verdant planted oasis, dependent on the season. Creating a beautiful organic sculpture and connection to nature, with an organic undulating form wrapping around the base of the tree. The right hand section is planted and woven with jasmine, clematis and honeysuckle. In the second iteration the willow sculpture encircles a parametric bench, creating a cocooned retreat, sheltered within and connected to nature. Both designs provide a much needed sanctuary for wildlife and insects in the midst of the bustling city.

The sculpture highlights the pressing need for urban regeneration and taking our cities back to nature, becoming more aligned with the planet and more climate conscious. Reflecting the areas much anticipated radical transformation from urban area to regenerated sanctuary, community and home.
